Arts & Film School Admissions Consulting
Applying to art, design, and film programs is very different from applying to traditional academic majors. Portfolio requirements, artist statements, creative supplements, and program-specific expectations vary widely between schools. Each student’s path is also unique — shaped by their artistic interests, goals, and the type of creative community they hope to join.
I offer one-on-one advising for students applying to undergraduate and graduate programs in creative fields including design, media arts, film & television production, screenwriting, cinematography, directing, production design, art direction, producing, and fine arts.
I bring over 10 years of experience in arts education and admissions, including my role as an Admissions Specialist at UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, where I participated directly in the application review process for the Design Media Arts major. Because I’ve been part of the evaluation process, I understand how admissions committees review creative portfolios and what makes an application stand out. I have also taught in the Design Media Arts major at UCLA and presented workshops on college admissions for the performing and visual arts at NACAC and WACAC conferences, as well as at high schools and community colleges across California.
In addition to my admissions experience, I am a working writer-director and filmmaker, which allows me to help students develop portfolios and essays that communicate both technical skill and a clear creative voice.
Students I’ve worked with have been admitted to a wide range of universities and art schools, including all University of California campuses (UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside, and UC Davis) as well as leading arts programs such as RISD, CalArts, Pratt, Parsons, and SAIC, along with universities including NYU, USC, Loyola Marymount, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, University of Washington, and University of Hawai‘i, among others.
Essay Coaching for All Majors
Even if you are not applying to an arts program, I can help students craft powerful application essays. With a background in screenwriting and storytelling, I guide students in transforming their experiences into compelling personal narratives that reveal their values, voice, and perspective.
You don’t need a dramatic life story to write a great college essay. Together we identify the ideas, experiences, and insights that make your application distinctive — and shape them into writing that feels authentic, thoughtful, and memorable.
What We Work On
Students typically receive guidance with:
Portfolio development and review tailored to each school’s requirements
Artist statements and creative statements
Personal statements and supplemental essays for any major
Story development and narrative structure for essays
Strategic portfolio planning, including suggestions for new work or assignments
Editing and refinement to ensure the strongest possible submission for each application
The process typically includes three phases:
1. Brainstorming
We begin by identifying your interests, experiences, and values to uncover the personal story behind your application.
2. Writing & Development
Through drafting and feedback, we shape essays and portfolios into clear, compelling presentations of your work and perspective.
3. Refinement
Finally, we polish the work — strengthening structure, clarity, and impact before submission.
